The Myth of Multitasking

Technology is meant to make our lives easier; indeed. It enables us to complete tasks with greater speed and efficiency. It is remarkable how the devices we use in our daily lives can complete all manner of different tasks simultaneously and this sort of multitasking is a good thing. However, us human folk are not computers and our brains are not meant to multitask when it comes to cognition and action.

Mindfulness, education & inspiration: transforming young lives from within

As moments of true inspiration are rare, it would appear that today I won the inspiration lottery; so many wonderful moments unfolded as the day progressed, revealing the bare heart of humanity and the hope that just maybe this generation of children will learn to treat themselves, each other and our planet with respect and compassion. It was marvellous.

Tech For Good: Where passion & innovation meets impact & profit

Navigating the UK social investment marketplace has been simultaneously exhilarating and infuriating; the belief that building and maintaining social capital through a profitable and scaleable business model is one that I have long held and it is encouraging that UK investors are making the right noises.

Misogynism & sex discrimination amidst the Digerati

I'd like to think that I work in a reasonably egalitarian industry, but some pretty unpalatable stories have begun to surface about the ill-treatment of women on the web conference speaking circuit; as I read about the experiences reported by Sarah Parmenter, Jen Strickland and Relly Annett-Baker, my heart began to sink as I realised that, mathematically speaking, it is highly probable that these incidences are not rare. As those who have spoken up are strong women in a testosterone laden industry and with very few women, let alone speakers, in the digerati, I fear what lies beneath.

If not now, when?

Although I love to write and speak about the stuff I feel passionate about, I am highly unsociable, a loner and if left to my own devices, could easily become a hermit without even realising it. In one of our weekly marathon work-life-and-the-kitchen-sink phone calls, my fellow hermit to be @smiffy informed me that I was an introvert pretending to be an extrovert and promptly despatched the link to an article in Scientific American entitled The Power of Introverts that outlined the whys and wherefores. Indeed, Matt was right, and as I can never leave well enough alone, I refined this to assert that I was 85% introvert and 15% extrovert, but this is just semantics.

Life, death, hope and love

I have been pondering death today; it is not that I am morbid, but the news that our friend's mother is losing her battle with cancer has resonated with me quite profoundly. I have tried to say the right things, but am not entirely sure that I know what they are, and so I pondered.

Empathy, Ignorance & Discrimination

I have experienced my fair share of discrimination in my lifetime, and I don't expect it to abate any time soon. Discrimination is driven by fear and borne of ignorance, and although it is a simple enough concept to fit into a single sentence, it is not such an easy problem to solve.

Parents, children, life, love, self-esteem and confidence

Life for most people is just downright complicated, but it doesn't start out this way: as small children life is pretty uncomplicated. We begin life with no responsibilities and are afforded the freedom to approach all that we encounter with an open and seemingly reckless abandon, to learn and grow with boundless curiosity, hope and anticipation.
